Some Smokers See E-Cigarette As Civil Rights Issue
With the pressure from the FDA and other health organizations, some e-cigarette users believe that e-cigarettes are not only safer, but as long as tobacco cigarettes stay legal, they have a right to a safer alternative.
GAINESVILLE, FL, May 18, 2009 /Gadgets PR News/ -- The act of smoking started thousands of years ago as a part of rituals throughout the world, but soon after became social both in purpose and practice. Today isn't very different, even though the health effects of inhaling combusted materials are much more understood. Lung cancer is the most serious health risk associated with smoking today, but while they know very well the risks, some smokers want to continue 'smoking' without all the toxins.
Enter the e-cigarette. The formal term is "electronic" or "electric cigarette", but fortunately for those smokers who actually enjoy the social aspect of smoking, it contains none of the carcinogens associated with inhaling fumes from lit tobacco. Inside the cartridges are a mixture of water, propylene glycol, flavorings, and of course, nicotine, although zero nicotine cartridges are available.
For a recreational smoker who wants all of the experience and none of the toxins of tobacco cigarettes, the e-cigarette may truly be the answer. But, organizations like the American Legacy Foundation and the FDA don't see it that way.
The American Legacy Foundation states that it is concerned that e-cigarettes will be used by smokers to "delay cessation attempts by providing smokers with a way to continue their smoking behaviors when they cannot smoke a tobacco product."
Some are wondering whether the ALF is attempting to blur the lines between health and civil rights. E-cigarette users and citizens alike are expressing concerns that the fight to keep people healthy is going too far.
"Everyone knows nicotine isn't good for your body, but even if the Family Smoking Prevention And Tobacco Control Act passes, they still won't outlaw tobacco cigarettes because the bill specifically forbids it," says Angel, an e-cigarette user in Florida. "How fair is that? It's really none of anyone's business why I use an e-cigarette or even a real cigarette, because I know the risks and it's my choice, not theirs."
