Addressing Window Covering Pull Cord Safety in Style

New cord cleats make it easier to secure window covering pull cords in an attempt to reduce the number of dangerous situations.

MIDDLETON, WI, July 09, 2010 /Gadgets PR News/ -- In recent weeks the call for an increase in window covering pull cord safety has been vigorously renewed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in the U.S. and internationally through a coordinated initiative of 29 countries as they attempt to reduce the number of injuries and deaths associated with pull cord strangulations. A solution recommended by the CPSC and window covering manufacturers is to mount a cord cleat next to the window to secure loose pull cords. However, "until now the only cord cleats readily available are time consuming to use and look more like what is used to secure a boat to a dock," according to Hussein Zoroufy, President of Z Basics, a product design and marketing firm. Z Basics has developed a line of fashionable cord cleats for window coverings called Z Cleats that take only about four seconds to secure the average length pull cord.

Z Basics hopes that by making cord cleats more attractive and easier to use people will choose to install them and use them day in and day out, greatly reducing the number of dangerous window cord situations that exist today. "We feel we have created a solution to the decades old yet elusive goal of making it easier and faster to properly secure window pull cords than to loop them into a ball by hand and put them on the window sill where they can fall and become a safety hazard," says Zoroufy.

Even a small improvement in reducing the number of window pull cords left dangling is significant. Industry statistics show approximately 800 million corded window coverings are in use in the U.S. and Canada. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association and the CPSC, the rate of tragedies occurring as a result of pull cords not being properly secured has at one point reached as high as one accident every two weeks.

Although no single product can eliminate a problem of this magnitude, making it more convenient to keep pull cords secure rather than loose is sure to be a major part of the solution. The patent pending Z Cleats are currently available for pre-order from the company's website www.zbasics.com and is working with retail partners to make Z Cleats available in retail stores nationwide later this year.
